5 DIY Crafts for Slow Living

Posted: July 24, 2020 by Elizabeth Tackett

I don’t know about you, but the days have been flying by lately. It’s hard to believe it’s already the middle of July.

If you haven’t figured this out already, I’m someone who enjoys slowing down the fast pace of life and living in the present. My desire here at This Old Soul is to rediscover simplicity, a dream I accomplish a little bit every day.

Lately, I’ve rediscovered the life-giving art of using my hands to create something beautiful.

Because I love working with my hands, crafting, and creating, I thought I would share 5 DIY crafts for slow living.

Now, I know there are some of you who are thinking

“I don’t craft”
“I’m not good enough”
“This isn’t my thing”

Hopefully I can encourage you, it’s not what you make that is important. It’s the process of creating that will bring you the most joy.

In fact, the final product might not be how you envisioned it. That’s ok! I doubt there is a maker out there who has a perfectly polished project every time.

But did you enjoy any part of process? Did it bring you some joy to think, mould, and discover while you created?

Whether you are just a beginner or an advanced maker, this list of 5 DIY crafts for slow living has something for everyone.

5 DIY Crafts

1. Make Decorative Bunting

Easiest decoration ever. Cut out some triangles, punch holes in them, put them on a piece of twine, string or yarn, whatever you have laying around! Bunting adds a nice, celebratory touch to a room and besides, it’s important to find something worth celebrating these days, right?

Here’s a tutorial for a basic paper bunting, if you’re an advanced crafter, try a fabric bunting for a little extra challenge.

4. Crochet

If this feels daring, let me encourage you to check out anything by Jess at Make and Do Crew. She has beautiful, modern designs, and has lots of great step-by-step tutorials. Here are two awesome projects:

5. Embroidery

I’ve only picked up embroidery in the past year or so, and I have to tell you, I’m hooked. It’s easy to pick up and put down, you can work with a small or large hoop, and you can listen to a podcast or music while working. Basically, it’s an awesome way to unplug. If you have done any embroidery or just want to give it a try, here’s a thorough list of modern embroidery patterns for beginners through advanced.
