How to Still Have Fun on Halloween (Even in Quarantine)

Posted: October 27, 2020 by Elizabeth Tackett

So many of us are still inside because of the pandemic, and you might be wondering, how do I still have fun on Halloween, even in quarantine?

While quarantine, shelter-in-place, stay-at-home orders, whatever your county or country is calling it, has been challenging, I also think it’s still possible to find joy in the regular rhythms and routines of the year.

It’s almost Halloween, and many people usually gather together for parties and go trick-or-treating. While it sounds fun, it’s certainly not an option for many of us, so I put together a quick list of ways to enjoy Halloween, even in quarantine.

Watch your favorite Halloween movies

Admittedly, I’m not a scary movie person at all, so I don’t have too many recommendations for adults, but hopefully by now you at least know your go-to favorites. If you have a family, try the Halloweentown movies on Disney, I grew up watching those and they’re all pretty family friendly.

Trick-or-treat down your hallway

If you have kids, parents (or maybe grandparents, aunts, cousins, whoever else is in your little bubble right now) can go behind different doors in your home and your kids can “trick-or-treat” at home.  Even if you only have one or two doors to use, it’s still a fun way for kids to pretend that they’re actually trick-or-treating.

Make a Halloween craft

Get crafty on Halloween and make cut-out pumpkins or trace yourself or your child and make a life-size scarecrow. Part of what makes Halloween fun is setting aside the housework, homework, and other chores of life, and being together as a family. This is a way to do that, even from home. If you’re into Halloween crafts, check out this list. If you’re wanting more of a fall-time harvest craft, check out this list or read my post on fall traditions to try this year.

Dress up

This seemed obvious, but is also the easiest thing to not do, especially as an adult. Dress up in some sort of costume, even for a little bit! If a full costume isn’t your thing, wear some Mickey Mouse ears or find a sweater with a pumpkin on it. Whatever it is, add a little festivity to your day. It’s the little things, right?

Eat a fall-themed dinner

If you went to a Halloween party, oftentimes the host will have prepared something fall-themed or Halloween themed. Make sure you do the same! There are so many soups or stews, breads you can bake or buy, and more. If this sounds too complicated, then at least make sure you do something out of the ordinary! Have pizza night or make or buy something special for dessert like Halloween-themed cookies or an apple pie.

I hope this list brings you a few ideas for how to still have fun on Halloween, even in quarantine. I know I had been looking forward to taking my daughter trick-or-treating this year, but I also know that there are many years to come.

Regardless of what is going on in the world, I hope you still enjoy a fun, spooky, and safe Halloween!
