Fall Traditions to Try This Year

Posted: October 23, 2020 by Elizabeth Tackett

I am the type of person who loves fall traditions.

Sometimes, traditions can be too much or come with unnecessary expectation (read my post on how to enjoy a simple fall), but other times they can build just the right amount of excitement and suspense and lead to a fun-filled season.

Over the last 7 years, my husband and I have enjoyed creating some fall traditions in our house. Some of these ideas are ones we have done since we first got married, and some are ideas I’d like to try this year. Check out the list below for some ideas and inspiration, and let me know in the comments what some of your favorite fall traditions are!

Visit your local pumpkin patch

Wherever we’ve lived, I have always searched out a pumpkin patch for us to visit (though when we lived in England, because we did not have a car, this consisted of the local grocery store). I have loved picking out pumpkins, taking pictures, and marveling at all of the different shapes and colors that pumpkins grow into. As our family has grown, it has been even more joyful to watch the look on my daughter’s face as she takes it all in and finds a little pumpkin or two of her own.

Bake pumpkin bread

This is something new I’ve done this year and I have to say, it truly makes me feel like I’m in the season of fall, even though the Bay Area continues to have temperatures in the 70s and 80s (and it’s mid-October). But, baking autumn goods helps me to enjoy the tastes of the season. This is the time to make pumpkin bread, pumpkin muffins, cinnamon loaf bread, buttermilk biscuits. So many options for delicious comfort foods!

Go apple picking

Apple picking is not something I have done regularly, but want to add to my list for the coming years. Not only does apple picking seem like a timeless activity, but the number of things you can make with apples is incredible! Pick enough to make your own applesauce, apple butter, homemade apple pie, or hot apple cider. I promise you won’t regret it.

Decorate your home for the season

Decorating is going to mean different things for different people. Some folks like to go all out and decorate every room in the house. Others might just put a few pumpkins on the doorstep or the kitchen table. Personally, I try to add a touch of the season to each room, whether it’s a pumpkin or a few gourds, a sign with a cute saying about fall, or a homemade craft.

Choose a fall craft to do with friends or family

Whether it is the same craft every year or something new, invite some friends to craft with you or find a family friendly craft for your kids. For a great list of crafts for the season, check out this post from Unoriginal Mom.

Take a walk around your neighborhood

My birthday is in October, so I’ve always made it a tradition to take a birthday walk and take pictures of all of the beautiful trees that are changing color at that time of year. Now that I live in the Bay Area again, the trees don’t quite change in the same way, but there are still so many signs of the seasons changing. Be sure to get out and enjoy the autumn while it lasts. If you live somewhere where the trees are magnificent shades of red, orange, and yellow, make sure to get out and enjoy the colors before the leaves are gone for the year!

These are just a few ideas for traditions to add to your fall season. Leave me a comment and tell me some of YOUR favorite traditions for fall!
