How to Enjoy a Simple Fall

Posted: October 21, 2020 by Elizabeth Tackett

Fall is my favorite season.

I’m not sure when I realized that, but I think it has something to do with enjoying the feeling of crunchy leaves under my feet, hot coffee, warm blanket scarves, and a general feeling of being cozy.

When this season comes around, I want to do all of my favorite fall activities! But, I also want to enjoy a simple fall and take in the season before it slips away.

As you may know by now, I’m all about simplicity. Simplifying the mind, heart, and soul so that you can enjoy life to the fullest is my passion, and helping you learn how to enjoy a simple fall is my goal for today.

So, how do you organize and figure out how to enjoy every moment of these days before they pass?

Read through my tips for how to enjoy a simple fall!

Make a list at the beginning of the season

Before you get too busy, make a list of all the things you’d like to do. Pumpkin carving, apple picking, baking, etc. Once you see the list in front of you you’ll be able to plan out when to do everything. Plus, having your list early means you can find the best time to go to the pumpkin patch before it gets crowded, or find a few new coffee shops to try.

Your home does not need to look like Pinterest

As beautiful as the homes are on Pinterest that are decorated for the season, might I remind you that it likely doesn’t show the laundry in the background or the dishes piled in the sink. If all you have energy to do is buy a few small pumpkins and put them on your table or in your entryway, that’s great! It’s not about how much you have, it’s about how it makes you feel. I enjoy decorating, but you might enjoy baking, watching a favorite movie, making a craft, etc.

Take time to learn about the season

Understanding more about each season gives me deeper appreciation for the natural changes that occur each year. Take time to marvel at the way plants let their leaves shed each year, only to grow back in the spring. Watch the animals get ready to hibernate for the winter. Learn about how the seasons came to exist on the calendar. I think it’s easy to take for granted the passing of time, but when we recognize it, time is truly is remarkable.

Declutter from the summer

Before moving into the fall, take time to declutter from the summer. Maybe you need to go through your clothes again, do a deep clean of your car, or sort through your files. Spring is not the only time for deep cleaning, and the more we make it a regular rhythm through the year, the cleaning will become more “maintenance” than continuous and endless work. It doesn’t need to take long, but be intentional about making time to close one season and open the next.

Make your living space cozy

The concept of “hygge” (pronounced “hoo-ga”) is what I’m going for here. Hygge is a Danish and Norweigan term that means creating a feeling of cozy and contentment. The goal for the fall season is to create this feeling in your home. This means pulling out the warm blankets, lighting candles at dinner or first thing in the morning, playing soft music, and enjoying a warm drink (tea or a hot toddy, your choice). Whatever it means for you to make your home cozy, be sure not just to create it, but to enjoy it!

Enjoy the tastes of the season

This is the time to make soups and stews, pumpkin breads and muffins, experiment with different coffee recipes, or brew yourself a pot of tea. Learn about what vegetables are in season and cook one or two new recipes. Perhaps this is the year you might learn how to bake a really good loaf of bread (though you may have already perfected your sourdough). There are so many delicious things to cook and bake, but if that isn’t your thing, make sure to support some local businesses by purchasing their seasonal food at the grocery store or buying the special at the restaurant.

There are so many ways to enjoy the season of fall without feeling the overwhelm of needing to do everything. By making a list you can determine what is right for you and your family this year. Giving yourself permission to remember that Pinterest is a resource, not a way of life, takes the pressure off of needing perfection.

All of these ideas are the starting point to helping you not just to enjoy a simple fall, but to truly soak up each day.
